Sebastien Bassong has implied that Tottenham's hopes of securing another top-four finish in the Premier League could depend on making a good start to 2011.
Spurs returned to the UEFA Champions League places on Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Newcastle, which stretched an unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 matches.
Bassong came off the bench in the second half to cover for the dismissal of Younes Kaboul as Tottenham, who had Jermain Defoe sent off against Aston Villa on Boxing Day, once again ended a game with 10 men.
The Cameroon defender is now likely to keep his position in the team for Saturday's London derby with Fulham at White Hart Lane, when Spurs will aim to build on their seven-point haul from matches against Chelsea, Villa, and Newcastle.
And Bassong is keen to begin the New Year on a positive note, as the centre-back said: "Starting 2011 with a win is really important for us and we need to keep going like that.
