The US congresswoman shot in Tucson, Arizona, a week ago has been removed from a ventilator and is breathing on her own through a tube inserted into her windpipe.
The University Medical Center in Tucson says Gabrielle Giffords remains in a critical condition.
Surgeons have also inserted a feeding tube and say her recovery is continuing as planned.
The Democrat Congresswoman was holding a public event outside a supermarket, when a gunmen opened fire, injuring her and killing six others, including a federal judge and a nine-year-old girl
A 22-year-old local resident, Jared Loughner, is in custody. (From ABC News)
