Sebastian Larsson's proposed move to Newcastle is in doubt after the Birmingham midfielder failed to agree terms.
The Magpies were given permission to speak to the Sweden international after talks reached an impasse concerning an extension to his current deal at St Andrews, which is due to expire at the end of the campaign.
But the 25-year-old now looks set to feature in the derby with Aston Villa on Sunday after being unable to reach an accord with Alan Pardew's side.
Blues boss Alex McLeish said: "Newcastle made a bid but I don't think Seb could agree terms so he is still a Birmingham player."
Larsson switched to St Andrews in a £1 million move from Arsenal in January 2007 and has gone on to establish himself as a regular in the side.
Some of Spain's top clubs are interested in taking him on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season, but Birmingham are keen not to lose him for nothing.
Liverpool, Everton, West Ham, Blackburn, Bolton and Sunderland are also thought to be monitoring the situation.
