Shanghai success for Roddick

Number 10 seed Andy Roddick has reached the second round of the Shanghai Masters after opponent Phillipp Kohlschreiber retired through illness.

Roddick was leading 6-3 2-1 when unseeded German Kohlschreiber, who was clearly out of sorts, called it a day.

"We've all been on the bad side of having to pull out of a match. It's not fun," Roddick said.

Tomas Berdych became the first man through to the last 16, easing past Tommy Robredo in straight sets in Tuesday's late match.

The seventh seed, who afterwards revealed he was suffering from an upset stomach, showed complete dominance as he romped through the first set before the Spaniard finally hit his stride in the second.

Robredo twice went a break up but could not press home his advantage as Berdych eventually won 6-0 6-4.
