Gerrard predicts tough battle

Steven Gerrard believes England face a 'long race' to qualify for Euro 2012 following Tuesday's goalless draw with Montenegro.

Fabio Capello's side failed to make an impact on the Zlatko Kranjcar's men at Wembley, with the minnows maintaining a three-point lead at the top of Group G after keeping four successive clean sheets.

England sit in second place with a game in hand but will have to wait more than five months for their next competitive clash in Wales.

The Three Lions looked likely to run away with the group after romping to victory in their opening encounters last month, but after their latest result Liverpool midfielder Gerrard admits qualifying could be more of a struggle.

"This group's going to be a long race," said Gerrard. "We started the campaign really well. Unfortunately, (last night) we never got that 1-0 win that we were looking for.

"But we keep going next year and hopefully we win more matches and get back to the top."
